Plot twist: the G65 might not live to see a new generation.
Khodrocar - A new report from Germany indicates Mercedes will host the world premiere of the hotly anticipated G-Class W464 in January 2018 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Within the same month, the company will begin to accept orders for the next generation and will have it at dealers across Europe starting from May.

Production at Magna Steyr’s Graz factory in Austria – where more than 300,000 units have been built so far - is slated to begin towards the end of March, which likely means customer deliveries won’t start until mid-2018 for European buyers, with the United States to follow before the end of the year.

Oddly enough, the same report suggests there are going to be some significant changes to the lineup as the V12-powered model might not live to see a new generation. Nothing is official at this point, but apparently the last hurrah for the G65 will be a Final Edition based on the outgoing W463 limited to only 65 units worldwide. It’s hard to believe the V12 model is being axed, but let’s not lose all hope as Mercedes has not confirmed this decision yet.

The bonkers G500 4×4² is facing the axe as well, and there’s a good chance Mercedes will also pull the plug on the G350d Professional. Later in the life cycle, the G-Class W464 could once again receive the Maybach treatment after the downright opulent G650 Landaulet of the outgoing generation.

Four inches (10 centimeters) wider than its predecessor, the G-Wagen will retain the body-on-frame configuration and the usual 4x4 hardware, including three locking differentials and low-range gearing. A newly developed independent front suspension has already been confirmed, together with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, which might turn out to be from the new family of straight-six mills. Also in the offing are a nine-speed automatic transmission and an electromechanical steering system, while on the inside it will get more technology and provide more space as a result of its increased footprint.

If the new G-Class will indeed debut in Detroit, we might see it online as early as December or the beginning of January.
