At a time when Iranian companies were making the most of the domestic private market, Hyundai and Kia continued to invest in research and development and to improve the quality of their vehicles.
Khodrocar - Chang Mong Koo, the CEO of the company, was looking to attract world-class engineers. These engineers were not willing to come to Korea for work.

Hyundai had a research and development center in California, but it did not have the facilities to operate. That's why he invested $ 130 million to build a well-equipped R&D center in Irvine, California.

The center was built by Skidmore Owings, one of the world's most famous architectural firms, and has carried out projects such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Kia and Hyundai were able to attract General Motors' leading designer, Joel Piaskowski, in the first step, and he became the design director of the two companies. With his presence, a number of world-renowned engineers joined Hyundai, one of whom was previously in charge of designing the DaimlerChrysler body.

Hyundai also entered the SUV market at the same time and launched its first long-wheelbase vehicle, the Trakan. The car was based on the second generation Mitsubishi Pajero and was produced with two engines of 3500 cc gasoline and 2900 cc diesel.

Shortly afterwards, Hyundai launched the second SUV, the Santa Fe. The name of the car, which was taken from a region in New Mexico, showed how important the American market is for Hyundai. The Santa Fe is based on the Sonata platform and uses a 2400 cc four-cylinder engine.

While everyone thought that Renault was going to assemble only Renault products in Korea by buying Samsung Motor Company, Renault Samsung, by establishing a well-equipped research and development center in the city of Jihang near Seoul, showed that it intends to build cars.

Renault Samsung worked on the Renault and Nissan platforms at the center. The center's first car was the SM3, which was based on the Nissan Blueboard platform.

Renault Samsung used the distribution network of Nissan and Renault for the global distribution of this car. The car was sold under the name Nissan Sunny in the Middle East market and used the name Scala to be available in the South American market.

SsangYong also launched its first car after splitting from Daewoo. The car, which was a large SUV, was called the Rexton and used the old Mercedes-Benz M Class platform and was designed by Italdesign.

Due to its weakness in research and development, SsangYong still used the old platforms of European companies and outsourced design work to foreign companies.

During this period, Daewoo's internal problems gradually showed themselves, and the company faced a trade deficit.

Although Daewoo had previously ceded SsangYong and had been a major exporter, management problems and financial indiscipline had caused a crisis in the company. The situation of Daewoo Motor Company became such that Kim Woo Jong, the CEO of this company, fled to France in order not to be imprisoned.

The South Korean government confiscated the company and auctioned it off. Companies such as Hyundai, Ford, Chrysler and GM Fiat were looking to buy Daewoo Motor, and eventually General Motors bought the company's passenger car division for $ 1.2 billion. The commercial vehicle and heavy vehicle division of Daewoo was also purchased by an Indian company called Tatamotor.

General Motors' purchase of Daewoo created problems for Kerman Automotive Company Kerman Automotive Industries was assembling two Daewoo products in Iran, and now General Motors was unable to cooperate with an Iranian company due to US sanctions. Due to this, Daewoo Company terminated its cooperation with the Iranian partner and the production of Daewoo cars in Iran was stopped.

Kerman Motor, which was facing a big problem, was looking hard for another company that could replace Daewoo, so it quickly reached an agreement with Hyundai, Volkswagen and a Chinese company called Chery.

Kerman Motor established new companies in its subsidiary so that each of them would represent these companies. Bam Automotive Company started producing one of the Brazilian Volkswagen products called Gol, but due to the existence of Peugeot 206 with a much better design and lower price, Volkswagen Gol was not a successful car in the Iranian market. Rhine Automotive Company, as the representative of South Korea's Hyundai Motor, started assembling the two cars of this Korean company in Iran.

One was the third generation Hyundai Elantra, which was launched in Iran under the name Avante XD, and the other was the second generation Accent, which was produced in Iran under the name Verna. Despite the poor design, these two cars were successful cars in the Iranian market due to their low depreciation and powerful engine.

The car management company also started assembling a product from the Chinese company Chery. The interesting thing was that this Chinese company entered the Iranian market when it was only 4 years old and during this time it was able to copy some of the most popular cars in the market. One of these cars was the QQ3, which was a copy of the Daewoo Matiz. This car was introduced to the Iranian market as MVM 110.
