New details about the 2019 Toyota Corolla hybrid have been revealed this week, before the all-new hatchback range goes on sale locally in August.
All variants of the new Corolla hatchback will be offered Down Under with the option of hybrid power when the new range arrives next month.

In the smaller Corolla, the Hybrid Synergy Drive system will involve a 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a pair of motor generators.

Toyota says this latest iteration of the hybrid setup features a "substantially upgraded" petrol engine, new motor generators, a new e-CVT transaxle, a new power control unit, and a new battery.

Outputs for the petrol engine are rated at 72kW and 142Nm (3600rpm), while the electric motor puts out 53kW and 163Nm.

While the numbers on paper don't represent much of an improvement over the model currently on sale, the company claims the new system "delivers a significantly improved drive experience", while the petrol engine itself has been modified to improve refinement.

In 2019, the Toyota hybrid range will be bolstered by the addition of the RAV4 hybrid – the first time the popular nameplate has offered petrol-electric power Down Under.
