Khodrocar - Volvo roll out a next-generation infotainment system based on Google’s Android operating system in the next few years. Not only will the system allow for automatic over-the-air software updates, but it will also host a variety of in-car apps from Google.
Drivers will receive real-time traffic data and route suggestions courtesy of Google Maps. New Volvos will also have Google Assistant, allowing drivers to use voice commands to control air conditioning, music, and messaging. Through Google Play Store, optimized for Volvo’s infotainment system, drivers can also download thousands of third-party apps.
Volvo announced last May that it was pairing up with Google on an Android-based infotainment system. At that time, Volvo said the new operating system would launch on new models within two years. Volvo still hasn’t provided an exact timeline, but it’s now saying the first Android-based system will arrive "in a couple of years.”
"The Google partnership is an important strategic alliance for Volvo Cars,” said Henrik Green, senior vice president of R&D for Volvo Cars, in a statement. "The Android platform, Google services and Google’s working relationship with app developers in-house and worldwide will help us further improve the Volvo car experience.”
Volvo’s current infotainment system is a huge improvement over its predecessor. But the system can be slow to load and cumbersome due to the many menus you have to sift through. It’ll be interesting to see how Volvo’s infotainment interface evolves, but adding Android is a great next step.
