Driving a vehicle with a high safety rating can mean the difference between life, serious injury, and death in the event of a collision. Midsize SUVs are among the safest vehicles on the market with new or freshly redesigned models tending to be the highest-rated.
KhodroCar - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rate vehicles’ crashworthiness based on their performance in a number of crash tests. U.S. News & World Report uses those scores to give each vehicle an overall safety score.

Safety scores play an important role as one of the components of each U.S. News overall vehicle score. The best vehicles achieve high ratings in all the categories U.S. News rates: performance, interior, safety, reliability, and critics’ ratings.

1- 2017 Tesla Model X


U.S. News Safety Rating: 10/10 | $85,500

The 2017 Tesla Model X is a good luxury midsize SUV that offers drivers a long range, the latest autonomous driving technology, plenty of space, comfort, and high safety ratings. The NHTSA has given the model its top five-star rating in each of the four crashes it tests.

The Model X comes with a number of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, side collision warning, lane departure warning, and advanced driver assistance technologies.

2- 2017 Volkswagen Touareg


U.S. News Safety Rating: 10/10 | $49,495

The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg is in its last model year before a completely redesigned version goes on sale, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking important safety technologies. A rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, and lane departure warning come standard.

The Touareg received top scores in all its evaluated crash test categories from the IIHS.

3- 2018 Volkswagen Atlas


U.S. News Safety Rating: 10/10 | $33,500

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is one of the top midsize SUVs U.S. News has evaluated. The vehicle is available with blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, remote start, forward collision monitoring with automatic braking, automatic high beams, and lane departure warning.

The IIHS gave the Atlas all Good ratings in each of its five crash tests and named it a Top Safety Pick.

4- 2017 Mazda CX-9


U.S. News Safety Rating: 10/10 | $31,520

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 is a three-row crossover that offers a good blend of comfort, quality, and drivability. A number of advanced safety technologies are available in the CX-9, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors.

The CX-9 has been given all Good ratings by the IIHS and been named a Top Safety Pick+.

4- 2017 Acura MDX


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $43,950

For 2017, Acura has made AcuraWatch driver assistance features standard in every MDX. The luxury midsize SUV also offers an engaging ride and excellent fuel economy, and it comes in a hybrid variant. All-wheel drive is available and it is competitively priced.

The NHTSA and the IIHS have given the 2017 Acura MDX their highest ratings.

5- 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $52,000

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE is a good luxury midsize SUV. Though it doesn’t offer the value of other models in its class, owners will enjoy its powerful engine, high-end cabin, large cargo area, and standard advanced safety technology, including a rearview camera, forward collision warning, a drowsiness monitor, and Mercedes-Benz’s predictive crash protection system.

The IIHS has named the 2017 GLE a Top Safety Pick+.

6- 2017 Lincoln MKX


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $38,260

The 2017 Lincoln MKX is a middle-of-the-road luxury midsize SUV that has a powerful optional V6 engine, is priced competitively, and has excellent safety scores. The two-row SUV has been named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS and been given a five-star overall rating by the NHTSA.

7- 2018 Kia Sorento


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $25,800

For the 2017 model year, Kia added a number of safety technologies to the Sorento, including adaptive headlights and automatic emergency braking. The 2018 model is essentially a carryover and has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS and has been given the NHTSA’s five-star overall rating.

9- 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $30,800

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe is a good midsize SUV that offers solid performance, a healthy list of features, and a comfortable interior. Advanced electronic safety and driver assistance aids were added for the 2017 model year.

The Santa Fe has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS and has been given a five-star overall rating by the NHTSA.

10- 2017 Buick Enclave


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $39,065

The 2017 Buick Enclave is a middling midsize SUV that offers a composed ride, spacious seating across three rows, and abundant cargo space. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure alert, and forward collision alert are available.

The 2017 Enclave gets Good ratings from the IIHS in the categories it was tested in. The NHTSA has given the SUV a five-star overall rating.

11- 2017 Chevrolet Traverse


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $28,700

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is a midsize SUV that scores higher in U.S. News’ safety ratings than in any other category. The NHTSA has given the SUV a five-star overall rating and it received all Good ratings in IIHS crash tests.

12- 2017 GMC Acadia


U.S. News Safety Rating: 9.7/10 | $29,070

The GMC Acadia was redesigned for 2017 and has many things going for it. The midsize SUV’s interior is versatile and full of features, it has responsive steering, is comfortable, and can come with all-wheel drive. A number of advanced safety technologies are available.

The 2017 Acadia received all Good scores from the IIHS and was named a Top Safety Pick. The NHTSA has given the car a five-star overall rating.
